Call for Code is a global coding challenge that encourages developers and problem solvers to address some of the world's most pressing issues.
Out of thousands of submissions, judges select five finalists to be recognized at the annual awards ceremony. The grand prize winner receives $200,000 to fund their project—but all finalists have the opportunity to work with Call for Code and its partners to deploy their solutions.
The Ask
Create an “open for all” interactive digital event that captures the excitement, drama, and unique spirit of the live award celebration. Recognize not just the five finalists, but all of the developers and problem solvers around the world who tackled Call for Code’s two challenges for the year: climate change and Covid-19.
The Solution
We reimagined the program as an all-digital event with the energy and excitement of American Idol, the prestige and star power of the Oscars, and the thrill and anticipation of the NFL Draft. The main part of the program—the hour-long awards ceremony—was hosted by CNN’s Van Jones, who served as a friendly, knowledgeable audience surrogate and established continuity from segment to segment. This ceremony was preceded by a 30-minute “Live from the Red Carpet” virtual pre-show and a “Behind the Scenes” backstage post-show, both hosted by The Weather Company’s Danielle Banks.
